Traditional Saunas

A traditional sauna, often called a Finnish sauna, is a high-heat environment (typically 70°C to 100°C) where heat is generated by an electric or wood-burning stove filled with stones. The defining feature is the ability to pour water over the scorching stones to create Löyly (a burst of steam). This increases humidity and intensifies the sensation of heat, providing a deep, invigorating sweat that differs significantly from the dry, lower-temperature infrared method.

The choice depends on your location and lifestyle:

• Wood-Burning Stoves: Perfect for rural settings or those seeking an authentic, rustic ritual. They provide a unique aroma and a softer, more atmospheric heat but require a flue system and a steady supply of firewood.

Traditional electric heaters have a higher power demand than infrared models because they must heat both the air and the stone mass:

• Small Units (under 4.5kW): May run on a dedicated 20-Amp circuit.
• Large Units (6kW to 9kW+): Generally require a dedicated 32-Amp or 40-Amp supply with a rotary isolator switch.

In a traditional sauna, heat rises and creates "stratification" (layers of different temperatures).

• Upper Bench: The hottest zone, perfect for experienced users seeking maximum intensity.

Because the heater needs to warm the thermal mass of the stones, you should allow 30 to 45 minutes for the cabin to reach the optimal temperature. This pre-heating time ensures that when you pour water on the stones, they are hot enough to instantly vaporise the water into a fine, comfortable steam rather than just making the stones wet
