Choosing the right heater output is critical for efficiency. As a general rule, you require 1 kW of power for every 1 cubic metre (m³) of sauna volume. To calculate this, multiply your room’s Length × Width × Height.

• Important Adjustment: If your sauna has uninsulated surfaces such as glass doors, windows, or stone walls, you must add approximately 1.2 to 1.5 cubic metres to your total volume for every square metre of glass/stone. This ensures the heater is powerful enough to compensate for heat loss.

The choice depends on your lifestyle and installation capabilities:

• Electric Heaters: These are the most popular choice for convenience. They offer precise temperature control, require no chimney, and heat up quickly. They are ideal for indoor use or urban environments where smoke regulations apply.
• Wood-Burning Stoves: These provide a traditional, authentic experience with the soft crackle of fire and a distinct aroma. They require a chimney flue system and a supply of firewood but are excellent for off-grid outdoor saunas where electricity is not available.

Yes. Most sauna heaters require a dedicated electrical circuit installed by a qualified electrician; they cannot simply be plugged into a standard 13-amp wall socket.

• Small heaters (up to 4.5 kW) may run on a standard single-phase 230V supply but still need hardwiring.
• Larger heaters (typically 9 kW and above) often require a three-phase 400V supply, which is less common in standard UK residential properties. Always check your home's electrical capacity before purchasing.
  
  

Yes. Electric sauna heaters are designed to hold special sauna stones that store heat. When the stones are hot, you can ladle small amounts of water onto them to create steam (known as löyly), which increases humidity and the perception of heat. Always use a ladle and never pour water directly onto the electrical elements or wiring.

Sauna stones are the "thermal battery" of your heater and degrade over time due to extreme heat cycles. For average home use (1–2 times per week), we recommend rearranging the stones once a year and replacing them completely every 1 to 2 years. If you notice stones crumbling, becoming discoloured, or if the heater takes longer than usual to warm up, it is time to replace them to protect the heating elements.

Safety is paramount. All heaters must be installed with specific safety distances from combustible materials (such as wooden benches and walls). These distances vary by model, so the manufacturer's manual must be followed strictly. Additionally, for wood-burning stoves, you must ensure the floor is protected by a non-combustible hearth, and the chimney meets UK building regulations for flue clearance.

Yes. Proper ventilation is essential not just for breathing but for the heater's performance. A heater requires fresh air intake (usually positioned low, near the heater) to mix with the hot rising air. Without this, the heat may stratify (leaving your feet cold) and the high-limit safety sensor on electric heaters may trip frequently due to overheating.
