Step 1: Finding Your Match

The most important step is picking the right "kW" for your sauna volume. If the heater is too small, it will struggle to get up to temperature; if it's too big, it heats the air too fast before the stones are ready.

Step 2: When the Box Arrives

The Top Steel is built for durability, but it’s always good to give it a quick welcome check.

• The Quick Look: Unbox the heater as soon as it arrives. It’s much better to see it now than on the morning your electrician arrives!
• The Finish Check: Take a quick glance over the black steel casing. We want that finish to be perfect for your sauna. If you spot any transit scuffs, just snap a photo and let us know within 24 hours.
• The Manual: Harvia includes a clear manual in the box. Keep this safe—it contains the wiring diagrams your electrician will need.

Step 3: Getting the Room Ready

While you're waiting for your installation date, there are two quick jobs you can do:

1. Washing the Stones: All three models use 20 kg of stones. Give them a good rinse in a bucket of plain water. This removes any stone dust so your first session smells fresh and clean.
2. Wall Support: These heaters are wall-mounted. Once loaded with stones, they weigh between 30 kg and 35 kg. Ensure your sauna wall is reinforced with a timber stud or a mounting plate exactly where you plan to hang the bracket.

Step 4: The Professional Connection

The Top Steel has its controls built right into the base, which makes the wiring much simpler as there is no external control panel to mount.

A Note for the Homeowner: These are guidelines to help you plan. Always follow your Registered Electrician’s professional advice, as they are the experts on-site.

• Power Supply: The M45 and M60 can usually run on a standard single-phase supply, while the M90 often requires a more robust setup. Your electrician will confirm what your home can handle.
• The Silicone Rule: The final connection inside the sauna must be made with High-Temperature Silicone Cable (SiHF-JB). Normal cable will bake and fail in the heat—silicone stays flexible and safe for years.
• No Plug: Despite being a "home" heater, these are hard-wired appliances and require a dedicated, fused circuit.

Step 5: Your First Session

Once your electrician gives you the green light, it’s time to prep the heater for its first run:

1. Stack Loosely: Place your washed stones into the heater. Don't jam them in; let them sit naturally so air can flow around them. This "airflow" is what actually heats your room.
2. The Burn-Off: Turn the heater on to its max setting for about 45 minutes with the sauna door open.
3. The "New" Smell: You might notice a metallic scent or a tiny bit of smoke—don't worry, it's just the manufacturing oils clearing off the elements. Once it’s gone, close the door, let it get up to temperature, and enjoy.

Stewardship & Warranty

• Save the EIC: Keep the Electrical Installation Certificate your electrician gives you. It’s your "golden ticket" for the 2-year warranty.
• Fresh Water Only: Only use fresh tap water on your stones. Saltwater or pool water will damage the steel and isn't covered by the warranty.

1. Power Demand & Circuit Protection

The Top Steel series is hard-wired appliances. Your electrician will need to ensure your "Main Fuse" has sufficient capacity to handle the heater’s load along with your other household appliances.

2. Cabling: The "Silicone" Requirement

Saunas present a unique challenge for wiring due to the extreme heat near the ceiling and walls.

• From the Consumer Unit: Your electrician will run standard cable (like SWA or Twin & Earth) to a junction box on the outside of the sauna wall.
• Inside the Sauna: From that junction box to the heater terminals, they must use SiHF-JB Silicone Cable (rated to 180°C).
• The Reason: Standard PVC cable will become brittle, crack, and potentially short-circuit in the heat. Using a silicone cable is a safety requirement and is essential to keep your warranty valid.

3. Integrated Controls & Logic

The Top Steel is an "All-in-One" unit, meaning the timer and thermostat dials are located on the base of the heater.

• Control Location: During installation, the dials can be switched from the left side to the right side of the unit to suit your sauna layout. Discuss this with your electrician before they finish the wiring.
• Internal Sensors: Because the sensors are built into the unit, there is no need for a separate wall-mounted sensor. This makes the wiring much cleaner.
• Safety Cut-Out: If the heater ever gets too hot (usually due to restricted airflow from tightly packed stones), there is a manual Reset Button for the overheat protector located on the underside of the heater.

4. Final Commissioning & Warranty

Once the wiring is complete and the "burn-off" test is done, your electrician will issue an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC).

• Why it matters: This certificate is your proof of a professional, safe installation. Harvia requires this to validate your 2-year warranty. Keep a digital or physical copy in a safe place.

What to expect from the moment it leaves our warehouse

The Top Steel is a substantial piece of equipment. Because it’s built to hold 20kg of stone, it’s a bit heavier than it looks. Here is a step-by-step look at how we get it to you and how you get it onto your wall.

1. The Delivery Journey (In-Depth)

We don’t just "post" these heaters; we treat them as precision instruments.

• The Packaging: Your Top Steel is shipped in a double-walled, reinforced Harvia carton. It’s a "parcel" delivery, but it’s a heavy one—usually weighing between 12kg and 16kg just for the unit itself.
• The Hand-Off: The driver will likely bring this to your front door. Because of the weight, they won't usually be able to carry it through to your garden or upstairs. It’s a good idea to have someone home to help move it to a safe, dry place.
• The "First Hour" Inspection: Once the driver leaves, open the box. You aren't just looking for the heater; you're looking for the Installation Kit (the wall bracket and screws) and the Manual.
• The Finish Check: Run your hand (carefully!) over the black steel casing. If you see any dents or scratches from the journey, take a clear photo. We ask for these within 24 hours because it allows us to hold the courier accountable and get you a replacement before your electrician arrives.

2. Preparing the Wall

The Top Steel is a wall-mounted heater. This is great for keeping your sauna floor clean and easy to mop, but it requires a solid fix.

• Total Weight: Remember, once you add the stones, the heater weighs about 35kg. You cannot fix this directly into thin cedar tongue-and-groove cladding alone.
• Find the Studs: Your electrician or joiner should locate the timber studs behind the cladding. If the studs don't line up with the heater's position, you’ll need to install a "noggin" (a horizontal timber brace) behind the wall before the cladding goes on.
• The Air Gap: Mount the heater so the bottom is 150mm to 200mm from the floor. This isn't just a suggestion—the heater uses this gap to pull in the oxygen it needs to "throw" the heat upward.

3. The Electrical Connection

The Top Steel models (M45, M60, M90) are "Plug & Play" for the electrician because the dials are already on the unit.

Electrician’s Brief: Always defer to the pro on-site. They will ensure your consumer unit can handle the load.

• Silicone Cable is Mandatory: Standard Twin & Earth or flex cable will fail inside a sauna. Your electrician must use SiHF-JB Silicone Cable (rated to 180°C) for the final connection from the wall to the heater.
• Control Positioning: The dials on the Top Steel can be moved from the left side to the right side of the heater during installation. Decide which side is easier to reach from your sauna bench before your electrician finishes the wiring.

4. Setting the Stones

The "Löyly" (the steam) depends entirely on how you stack your 20kg of stones.

• The Rinse: Dust from the quarry can clog the heater. Rinse the stones in a bucket of water before use.
• The "Airtight" Mistake: Do not pack the stones tightly. You should be able to see gaps between them. If you pack them like a wall, the heat gets trapped, the elements will overheat, and the safety switch will trip.
• Element Protection: Make sure the stones are placed between and over the elements, so you don't accidentally pour water directly onto the glowing metal.

5. The Heat Protocol

Every new heater has a thin layer of protective oil from the factory.

1. The Burn-Off: Turn the heater to its maximum heat setting.
2. Ventilate: Open the sauna door and any windows in the room. Let it run for 45 minutes.
3. The Scent: It might smell a bit smoky or metallic. This is totally normal. Once the 45 minutes are up, the smell will be gone forever, and your sauna is ready for its first real session.

Protecting your investment for the long term

The Top Steel is a workhorse of a heater, built for daily use and long life. To ensure your 2-year warranty remains in perfect standing, there are a few professional standards and maintenance habits you’ll need to follow.

1. Your Coverage Period

The warranty duration is based on the type of environment the heater is working in:

• For Your Home (Private Use): 24 Months (2 Years).
• For Business (Commercial Use): 3 Months.
• Note: Keeping your original purchase receipt is essential for any future claims.

2. The "Professional Install" Rule

Because the Top Steel is a high-powered electrical appliance, the warranty is only valid if the installation meets national safety standards.

• Qualified Electrician: Your heater must be installed by a Registered Electrical Contractor.
• The EIC Document: Keep the Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) that your electrician gives you. This proves the unit was earthed, fused, and wired correctly. Without this document, Harvia cannot honour a warranty claim.
• Silicone Wiring: The use of standard domestic PVC cable inside the sauna room will void the warranty. The final connection must be made using High-Temperature Silicone Cable (SiHF-JB).

3. Heating Element Stewardship

The heating elements are the most vital part of the unit. You can extend their life significantly by following these two rules:

• Loose Stone Stacking: You must stack the 20kg of stones loosely. If stones are wedged in too tightly, heat cannot escape. This causes the elements to warp or burn out and can lead to the safety switch constantly tripping.
• Fresh Water Only: The stainless steel internals are designed for fresh tap water. Using water from a swimming pool (chlorine) or the sea (salt) is highly corrosive and will cause damage that is not covered by the warranty.

4. Annual Maintenance

To keep the Top Steel running efficiently, we recommend a "Quick Audit" once a year:

• The Stone Shuffle: Over time, sauna stones can crack due to the heat. Once a year, take the stones out, discard any small fragments or "gravel" at the bottom, and re-stack them. This ensures the airflow stays perfect.
• Limescale: In hard-water areas, limescale can build up on the elements. Rinsing your stones before the first use and performing the "annual shuffle" helps prevent this buildup.

5. What is Not Covered?

To keep things transparent, the warranty covers manufacturing defects rather than maintenance issues. It generally does not cover:

• Consumable items (the sauna stones).
• Professional labour costs for replacing a part.
• Damage caused by improper stone stacking or using treated water.

Harvia Sauna Heaters — Returns & Refunds Policy

At Balance Recovery we want you to be completely happy with your purchase. If you change your mind, the following returns policy applies to our range of Harvia sauna heaters. It is offered in addition to, and does not affect, your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.

1. Your 14-Day Return Window

You may request a return within 14 days of receiving your Harvia sauna heater. To start a return, contact us at contact@balancerecovery.co.uk with your order number and details before sending anything back.

2. Condition & Packaging

To be eligible for a return, the heater must be unused and unopened, in its original, undamaged packaging, complete with all components, fittings, control units, stones and documentation included. Heaters that have been installed, wired in, used, or removed from their original packaging cannot be returned under this change-of-mind policy (your statutory rights for faulty goods are unaffected — see section 6).

3. Return Shipping

You are responsible for the cost of returning the goods. We recommend using a tracked, insured service suitable for a heavy item, as the heater remains your responsibility until it reaches our warehouse. Please retain your proof of postage.

4. Inspection on Return

Once your return arrives at our warehouse it will be inspected to confirm its condition and that it is complete. We aim to complete this inspection promptly and will keep you informed throughout.

5. Your Refund

• If, on inspection, the heater is returned complete and undamaged in its original condition, we will issue a full refund.
• If any part of the heater is found to be missing or damaged on inspection, the cost of the missing or damaged part(s) will be deducted from your refund, and the remaining balance refunded to you.
• Refunds are issued to the original payment method once the inspection is complete.

6. Faulty, Damaged or Incorrect Goods

This change-of-mind policy is separate from your rights if goods arrive faulty, damaged in transit, or not as described. Any missing, damaged or incorrect parts should be reported promptly on delivery (please refer to the product's manufacturer's warranty for the reporting timeframe). Where goods are faulty or damaged in transit, you will not be charged for return shipping, and we will arrange repair, replacement or refund in accordance with your statutory rights.

7. How to Request a Return

Email contact@balancerecovery.co.uk with your order number, the item(s) you wish to return, and the reason. We will confirm the return address and next steps before you send anything back.

8. Your Statutory Rights

Nothing in this policy affects your statutory rights. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described; under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have cancellation rights for most items bought at a distance. This policy is provided in addition to those rights.
