Harvia Top Steel E-Series Black | The Digital-Ready Wall-Mounted Classic

The Harvia Top Steel E-Series (4.5kW – 9.0kW) is the sophisticated evolution of Finland’s most trusted wall-mounted heater. By moving the controls to an external digital panel, the Top Steel E achieves a sleek, minimalist look in a striking brushed black finish.

Specifically engineered for modern residential saunas (3m³ – 14m³), this range is the gold standard for owners who want degree-perfect temperature precision and the ability to start their sauna remotely via smartphone. It combines the legendary rapid-heat convection of the Top Steel range with the flexibility of a high-tech smart-home system.

Why the Top Steel E-Series is the 2026 Smart-Home Choice:

1. Smart-System Compatibility

As an "E-Series" unit, this heater is built to be paired with external digital power boxes.

  • WiFi-Ready: Pair with the Harvia Xenio WiFi controller to pre-heat your sauna from your phone while at the gym or in the office.
  • Sleek Interior: With no mechanical dials on the chassis, the heater offers a more streamlined, professional appearance that complements modern glass-fronted cabins.

2. High-Flow Air Circulation

The Top Steel E is not just about looks; it is a thermal powerhouse.

  • The "Chimney Effect": Its open-grille design draws cool air from the floor and cycles it through the 20kg stone bed 15% faster than decorative column heaters.
  • Rapid Recovery: Perfect for family saunas where the door is opened frequently—the elements are designed for fast heat recovery to maintain a steady 80°C – 100°C climate.

3. Professional Grade Reliability

The internal structure is built with the same industrial stainless steel components as Harvia’s commercial range.

  • Longevity: Designed to withstand the high-humidity environment of the UK, the black powder coating resists corrosion and maintains its finish for years.
  • Massive Stone Mass: Houses 20kg of stones, providing the authentic Finnish "Löyly" (steam) that small, cheap heaters cannot produce.

From Order Confirmation to Your First Digital Sauna Session

The Top Steel "E" series (M45E, M60E, M90E) takes the classic, reliable wall-mounted heater and moves the "brain" to the outside of your sauna. This means no more reaching down to turn dials—you control your heat, timing, and lighting from a sleek digital panel on your wall.

Step 1: Selecting Your Power & The "E" Requirement

First, match the heater to your room size. Second, remember that the "E" models require a separate control panel to function.

Important: If you haven't already, ensure you add a Harvia control unit to your basket. The heater will not turn on without one!

Step 2: Delivery (The "Arrival" Process)

We want the transition from our warehouse to your wall to be seamless.

  • The Parcel: These heaters are shipped in reinforced cartons. They are heavy but manageable for a standard courier delivery.
  • The Stone Boxes: If you ordered stones, they will arrive in separate 20 kg boxes.
  • The 24-Hour Inspection: Open the box immediately. Since the "E" model is a minimalist design, check the black steel casing for any transit scratches. If anything is less than perfect, take a photo and let us know within 24 hours.

Step 3: Preparation (What to do while you wait)

  1. Washing the Stones: Your Top Steel uses 20 kg of stones. Give them a thorough rinse in a bucket of water. Removing the dust now prevents that "burnt dust" smell on your first use.
  2. Control Unit Placement: Decide where your digital panel will sit (usually outside the sauna door at eye level). Your electrician will need to run a data cable from here to the power unit.
  3. Wall Reinforcement: Once loaded with stones, these heaters weigh up to 35 kg. Ensure your wall has a timber stud or mounting plate in place.

Step 4: The Professional Connection

The "E" series installation is slightly more complex than a manual unit.

  • The Setup: Your electrician will install a Power Unit (usually tucked away in a cupboard or on top of the sauna) which connects the digital control panel to the heater.
  • The Sensor: A temperature sensor (included with your control panel) must be mounted on the ceiling directly above the heater.
  • The Silicone Rule: The final connection from the wall to the heater must be made with High-Temperature Silicone Cable (SiHF-JB).

Step 5: The "First Heat" Ceremony

Once your electrician gives the thumbs up:

  1. Stack Loosely: Place the stones into the heater. Don't pack them tight; air needs to flow between the rocks to heat the room.
  2. The Burn-Off: Use your digital panel to set the heater to max. Let it run for 45 minutes with the sauna door open.
  3. The Scent: It’s normal to smell a bit of manufacturing oil being burnt off. Once the air clears, your digital sauna experience is officially ready.

Stewardship & Warranty

  • The EIC Certificate: Keep the document your electrician provides. This is your proof of professional install and is required for your 2-year warranty.
  • Fresh Water Only: To protect the high-grade steel, use only fresh tap water on your stones. Avoid salt or pool water.

Guidelines for the Harvia Top Steel "E" (4.5 kW, 6.0 kW, 9.0 kW)

A Note for the Homeowner: This guide is for project planning and should be handed to your Registered Electrician. They will ensure the installation is safe and complies with all UK electrical regulations. You must always defer to your qualified electrician's judgment.

1. Power Demand & System Architecture

The "E" models have no internal controls. They must be connected to a separate Power Unit (such as the Harvia Xenio CX110), which acts as the relay for the digital wall panel.

2. Wiring Logic: The Three-Way Connection

Your electrician will need to wire three distinct paths to make the system functional:

  1. Mains to Power Unit: Standard supply cable (e.g., SWA or Twin & Earth) to the external relay box.
  2. Power Unit to Heater: This final run inside the sauna must be SiHF-JB Silicone Cable (rated to 180°C).
  3. Sensor Wire: The temperature sensor (included with the control unit) must be wired from the ceiling above the heater back to the power unit using the provided data cable.

3. The Silicone Cable Rule

Standard PVC or "Arctic" cable will become brittle and fail behind the sauna cladding.

  • Requirement: Only High-Temperature Silicone Cable (SiHF-JB) should be used for the connection between the wall junction box and the heater terminals.
  • Warranty: Using standard domestic cable in an asauna environment will void the manufacturer’s warranty and pose a fire hazard.

4. Sensor Positioning

For the digital panel to read the room temperature accurately:

  • The sensor must be mounted on the ceiling, centred directly over the heater.
  • The sensor housing contains an overheat protector. If it is mounted too close to a vent or too far from the heater, the system may cycle incorrectly or trip.

5. Commissioning & Documentation

Once the wiring is complete and the "burn-off" test is finished, your electrician should issue an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC).

  • Keep this safe: Harvia requires proof of a professional, certified installation to validate your 2-year warranty.

Harvia Top Steel "E" Series: Delivery & Installation Manual

Integrating your wall-mounted heater with digital controls

The Top Steel "E" is a minimalist powerhouse. By removing the onboard dials, Harvia has created a sleeker heater that relies on a separate "brain." This manual walks you through the physical and technical steps to get it up and running.

1. The Delivery

  • The Package: You will receive the heater in a sturdy Harvia carton. It is a "one-person lift" for the heater itself, but if you ordered the 20kg of stones, be prepared for a second, much heavier box.
  • Checking the "E" Components: When you open the box, you will notice there are no dials at the base. This is intentional. You should find the wall-mounting bracket and a small bag of fixings.
  • The 24-Hour Audit: Harvia’s black finish is beautiful, so check it for any transit scuffs immediately. If you find any issues, take a photo and let us know within 24 hours.

2. Mounting the Pillar

The Top Steel "E" is designed to be space-efficient, but it needs a solid "anchor."

  • The Height: The heater should be mounted so that the bottom is 150mm to 200mm from the floor. This gap is vital—it’s the "air intake" that allows the heater to circulate warmth.
  • The Support: Do not screw the bracket into thin cladding alone. Ensure the screws go into the timber studs or a horizontal "noggin" behind the wood. Fully loaded with 20kg of stone, this unit is heavy enough to pull a bracket off a weak wall.
  • Levelling: Use a spirit level on the bracket. If the heater is tilted, the stones won't sit correctly against the elements, which can lead to uneven wear.

3. The Electrical "System" Setup

This is where the "E" model comes to life. Your installation is now a three-part system:

  1. The Control Panel: Usually mounted outside the sauna at eye level.
  2. The Power Unit: This is the "relay box" that sits between the panel and the heater (often hidden on top of the sauna or in a nearby cupboard).
  3. The Heater: The "slave" unit that follows the instructions from the panel.

Note: Your Registered Electrician will handle the wiring. Ensure they have the manual for your specific control panel as well as the heater.

4. Sensor Placement (The Critical Step)

For an "E" model to work, the temperature sensor (included with your control panel) must be installed correctly.

  • The Sweet Spot: The sensor must be mounted on the ceiling, directly above the centre of the heater.
  • The Result: If it's too far away, the sauna will get dangerously hot before the sensor tells the heater to stop. If it's too close, the heater will "click off" before the room is actually warm.

5. Stoning & The First Fire

  1. Rinse: Wash your 20kg of stones to remove dust.
  2. Stack Loosely: Lay the stones between and over the elements. You should be able to see small gaps between the rocks. If you pack them like a solid wall, the heat cannot escape the heater, and you'll trip the safety switch.
  3. The Burn-Off: Turn the heater to max via your digital panel. Run it for 45 minutes with the sauna door open to clear any manufacturing residues. Once the smell is gone, you’re ready for your first session.

Harvia Top Steel "E" Series: Warranty Guidelines

Protecting your digital sauna investment

The Top Steel "E" range (M45E, M60E, M90E) is engineered for precision and longevity. To ensure your 2-year warranty remains fully active, there are specific installation and maintenance standards required to protect both the heater and the external control system.

1. Coverage Periods

Your warranty protects against manufacturing defects in the heater and its internal elements:

  • Domestic/Private Use: 24 Months (2 Years).
  • Commercial/Professional Use: 3 Months.
    • Note: Keep your original purchase receipt; it is the "birth certificate" for your warranty claim.

2. The Professional Standard (Installation)

The "E" model relies on a complex digital-to-analog connection. As such, the warranty is only valid if:

  • Certified Installation: The unit and its power controller are installed by a Registered Electrical Contractor.
  • The EIC Document: You must retain the Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC). This confirms the system was wired, earthed, and fused according to Harvia’s technical specifications.
  • The Silicone Requirement: Use of standard PVC or household flex inside the sauna room will void the warranty. Your electrician must use High-Temperature Silicone Cable (SiHF-JB) for the final connection to the heater.

3. Operational Stewardship

How you treat the heater during your sessions directly impacts the life of the elements:

  • Loose Stone Stacking: You must stack the 20kg of stones loosely. If stones are packed too tightly, heat cannot escape. This causes the elements to overheat, warp, or burn out—damages which are not covered by the warranty.
  • Fresh Water Only: The high-grade steel is designed for fresh tap water. Using water from a swimming pool (chlorine) or the sea (salt) is highly corrosive and will cause damage to the shell and elements that is excluded from warranty coverage.
  • The Sensor Rule: The temperature sensor must be installed exactly where specified (on the ceiling above the heater). Incorrect sensor placement can lead to "short-cycling" or element burnout.

4. Annual Maintenance

To keep the warranty in good standing, we recommend an "Annual Health Check":

  • The Stone Shuffle: Once a year, remove all stones. Discard any "gravel" or broken pieces at the bottom of the heater. Re-stack the stones loosely to ensure the airflow remains optimal.
  • Terminal Check: Ensure that the stone dust hasn't built up around the electrical connection points at the base of the heater.

5. What is Not Covered?

  • Consumable items (the sauna stones).
  • Limescale buildup caused by hard water.
  • Failures caused by improper stone stacking or poor airflow.
  • Damage to the external control panel caused by moisture if it was installed inside the sauna room (panels should be outside).

8. Your Statutory Rights

Nothing in this policy affects your statutory rights.
