Harvia is widely recognised as the pioneer of the modern Finnish sauna. Based in Muurame, Finland, they are renowned for combining traditional sauna practices with modern engineering. Their heaters are characterised by heavy-duty stainless steel construction, exceptionally efficient air-flow designs, and the ability to hold substantial quantities of stones. This design philosophy ensures a "soft" heat and a superior löyly (steam) when water is added, setting them apart from lighter-weight competitors.

• Wall-Mounted Models: These are designed for compact efficiency. They attach directly to the sauna wall, maximising floor space in smaller cabins while heating the room quickly. They typically have a lower stone capacity (approx. 20kg), offering a faster heat-up time.
• Pillar (Cylindrical) Heaters: These floor-standing models are a Harvia signature. They hold a massive quantity of stones (often 80kg to 100kg+). The open stone face allows you to control the steam intensity—throw water on the side for soft steam, or on top for a fierce heat. They are often chosen as a visual centrepiece for the sauna.

Harvia offers two distinct control types across their range:

• Mechanical (Built-in): These feature robust dials directly on the heater body for time and temperature. They are simple, reliable, and require no extra wiring, making them popular for straightforward home installations.
• Digital (External): Many Harvia models require a separate digital control unit (often Wi-Fi enabled). These sleek touch-panels are mounted outside the sauna, allowing you to pre-set temperatures, lighting, and fan timers. This setup removes the electronics from the hot environment, prolonging their lifespan.

A common safety feature on Harvia electric heaters is the thermal cut-out, which trips if the heater detects a fire risk (often due to poor ventilation or tightly packed stones).

The Fix: On most mechanical models, there is a small "Reset" button located near the thermostat dials (often hidden behind the stones or at the bottom of the unit). You typically hear a "click" when it is successfully reset. Note: You must allow the heater to cool down completely before attempting this.

• Why? Harvia heaters are engineered for specific airflow. Round river rocks or ceramic stones can pack too tightly, blocking air circulation and causing the heating elements to overheat and fail.
• Maintenance: Harvia recommends rearranging the stones at least once a year and replacing them every 1–2 years (for home use) to ensure the heater "breathes" correctly.

Wood-burning stoves burn much hotter than electric heaters and require stricter clearances.

• Combustible Materials: You must adhere strictly to the "safety distance to combustible materials" (e.g., wooden walls/benches) stated in the manual. This is often 300mm–500mm but can be significantly reduced by using Harvia’s protective bedding and sheath accessories.
• Floor Protection: A non-combustible hearth or glass floor plate is essential to protect against falling embers.

• Domestic (up to 9kW): Many Harvia heaters in the 4.5kW to 9kW range are "dual voltage," meaning they can be wired for either single-phase (230V) or three-phase (400V). However, a 9kW heater on single-phase draws a high current (approx. 40 Amps), so you must check your home’s fuse rating.
• Commercial (10.5kW+): Larger Harvia club heaters strictly require a 400V three-phase supply.

 For standard domestic use in the UK, Harvia electric heaters and wood-burning stoves typically come with a 2-year warranty against material defects. For commercial use (e.g., in hotels or gyms), this is often limited to 1 year or defined by "hours of operation" due to the increased wear on components.
