When this client first approached us, they possessed one of the most magnificent canvases imaginable: a property with sweeping, uninterrupted views of the ocean. Their goal was to create a bespoke outdoor sauna that would allow them to fully immerse themselves in this breathtaking panorama year-round. During the summer, the sauna serves as the perfect complement to their outdoor pool—a place to warm up after a swim while taking in the horizon. In the colder months, it transforms into an essential thermal retreat, offering a deeply traditional Finnish sauna experience to rejuvenate the body after facing the bracing coastal winds.
The Exterior: Striking Silhouettes and Absolute Privacy
For the exterior architecture, the client envisioned a design that was traditional in its roots but highly expressive in its execution.
The Bold Black Thermowood
The structure is clad in premium Thermowood, chosen for its renowned ability to withstand harsh, salty coastal weather for decades. To make the sauna truly stand out, the client opted for a striking black painted finish. This bold choice creates a stunning, modern architectural silhouette that contrasts beautifully against the vibrant blues of the sea and sky, making the sauna a brilliant focal point of the garden rather than just a background structure.
Reflective Tinted Glass
To maximise the view without sacrificing an ounce of intimacy, we installed a sprawling front window using specialised reflective, tinted glass. From the outside, the glass mirrors the surrounding coastal landscape, completely concealing the interior. Inside, however, the occupants are treated to a crystal-clear, panoramic view of the ocean in uncompromising privacy.
The Integrated Cooling Station: A Unique Shower Design
To create a complete outdoor wellness loop, an integrated shower area was built seamlessly into the exterior structure. Featuring a highly unique, custom-crafted wood design, this space allows occupants to quickly rinse off before jumping into the pool or to cool down their core temperature between sauna sessions. We integrated overhead spotlights into the shower’s ceiling, ensuring that even after the sun goes down, transitioning from the intense heat of the sauna to a refreshing rinse remains a safe, effortless, and luxurious experience.
The Interior: The Pinnacle of Premium Thermo Alder
Stepping inside, the minimalist design language continues, focusing entirely on high-end effectiveness and supreme comfort. The two-tier benches and interior panelling are crafted exclusively from Thermo Alder—the undisputed gold standard in the luxury sauna market.
The Superiority of Thermo Alder
Through an advanced, chemical-free thermal modification process, Alder wood is baked at high temperatures. This completely removes its moisture content, meaning the wood will never warp, shrink, or secrete resin, even under the intense heat of a traditional Finnish sauna. Furthermore, the process deepens the wood to a rich, luxurious reddish-brown hue and significantly lowers its thermal conductivity. This ensures the benches remain comfortably warm to the touch, rather than scalding hot, allowing for extended, luxurious relaxation.

To power this coastal retreat, the client selected the highly revered Harvia Clindro PC90, a staple in top-tier bespoke outdoor saunas.
Traditional Finnish Engineering
The Cylindro is a masterpiece of modern sauna engineering that deeply honours Finnish tradition. Its tall, open-pillar design houses a massive volume of sauna stones.
Customizable Löyly
This open structure is the secret to a perfect sauna experience. When occupants ladle water over the stones, they can dictate the exact intensity of the heat (löyly). Pouring water down the side of the pillar produces a soft, gentle, and highly humid steam, while pouring it directly on top delivers the sharp, intense heat that traditionalists crave.
The Therapeutic Experience: Salt, Sea, and Sunset
What truly elevates this bespoke build is the visceral connection to its environment. Every time the heavy wooden door opens, occupants are greeted by the therapeutic, cool mist of the salty sea air—a breathtaking and invigorating contrast to the dry, enveloping heat of the cabin.
As evening approaches, the magic of the location truly reveals itself. We integrated warm, ambient LED spotlights beneath the Thermo Alder benches. When the sun sets and the horizon fades, the gentle interior glow creates a deeply cosy, meditative atmosphere. Resting in the profound warmth of the sauna while watching the dark waves crash against the shoreline late at night offers a raw, natural therapy that grounds the body and clears the mind. It is the absolute pinnacle of outdoor wellness.
