• Commercial Generators: Engineered for heavy-duty, continuous operation in spas, gyms, or hotels. These units are built with heavy-gauge stainless steel tanks, reinforced heating elements, and intelligent standby modes to handle running for 12 to 24 hours a day without overheating or failing under constant demand.

Sizing is critical for both home and commercial setups. If your generator is undersized, it will run constantly and fail to produce dense steam. Generator capacity is measured in kilowatts (kW) and must be matched to your room's volume.

• Base Volume: Multiply your enclosure's Length, Width, and Height (in metres).
• Material Adjustment: Wall materials significantly affect heat retention. Non-porous materials like acrylic or ceramic tile retain heat well. However, if you are using porous materials (common in luxury commercial builds) such as natural stone, marble, or heavy concrete, you must multiply your base volume by 1.5 to 2.0 to account for heat absorption.

• Sealed Enclosure: The space must be fully enclosed from floor to ceiling with watertight doors to prevent vapour from escaping.
• Sloped Ceiling: Your ceiling must be built with a slight slope (a drop of approximately 50mm per metre). This prevents condensed hot water from forming droplets and dripping onto bathers; instead, the water runs smoothly down the walls.
• Vapour Proofing: Standard tile grout is not waterproof. The walls and ceiling require a complete vapour barrier or tanking membrane beneath the tiles to protect the building's structural integrity.

Generators must never be installed inside the actual steam enclosure due to moisture and safety risks.

• Domestic Placement: They are usually installed in a dry, accessible area up to 10 to 15 metres away, such as an adjacent airing cupboard, a heated loft space, or tucked inside a bespoke vanity unit.
• Commercial Placement: Commercial units are typically housed in a dedicated, well-ventilated plant room.

• Electrics: Smaller domestic units (e.g., 3kW to 6kW) can usually run on a single-phase (230V) supply with a dedicated circuit and RCD protection. Large residential and all commercial units (9kW to 15kW+) typically require a three-phase (415V) supply.
• Plumbing: The system requires a cold mains water feed, a heavily insulated copper steam line piped to the steam head, and a heat-resistant drainage line (capable of handling boiling water) to safely empty the tank.

The biggest enemy of any steam generator is limescale. Without proper maintenance, scale will coat the heating elements, causing the system to fail.

• Water Softening: If you live in a hard-water area, it is essential to install an inline water softener before the water reaches the generator. For commercial sites, a heavy-duty, twin-cylinder softener is mandatory.
• Auto-Drain Feature: To minimise manual maintenance, ensure your chosen model features an automatic drain-down valve. This automatically purges the water tank after each session, drastically reducing the risk of scale buildup.
• Descaling: Even with soft water, you will need to periodically flush the system with a liquid descaler. Many commercial units feature automated, programmable descaling cycles to reduce downtime for maintenance.

• Inside the Room: Commercial steam rooms often utilise an adjustable static vent to introduce fresh air and regulate the density of the steam cloud.
• Outside the Room: You must have an efficient, high-capacity extraction fan located outside the enclosure (in the main bathroom or spa corridor). Once the session finishes and the glass door is opened, the extractor fan safely pulls the dense moisture out of the building, preventing damp and mould issues.
