Superior Wellness Swim Spa Buying Guide
1. Pre-Purchase Technical Consultation & Site Assessment
Before any payment is made or an order is finalised, we conduct a comprehensive technical consultation. Given that a swim spa is a permanent, high-capacity engineering installation, this stage ensures that your property can safely support the unit.
-
Technical Alignment: We will review your chosen model's specific 40 Amp draw against your home’s current electrical capacity to ensure your consumer unit can handle the additional load.
-
Logistical Feasibility: Our logistics experts will review your site via video or photos to determine if a HIAB (truck-mounted crane) is sufficient or if a standalone mobile crane is required.
-
Foundation Verification: We provide the exact structural weight specifications (Total Filled Weight) so your groundworks team can prepare a reinforced concrete base (typically 150mm–200mm thick) that meets the necessary PSI ratings.
-
Project Timeline: We coordinate with your chosen electrician and crane provider to align their schedules with our delivery window, ensuring a "first-time" successful installation.
2. Place Your Order & Site Check
Select the swim spa model that aligns with your fitness and hydrotherapy goals. Because each swim spa is a significant engineering installation, we require a video survey of the delivery route.
-
The Route: Please film from the kerbside to the final installation pad.
-
Details: Highlight gate widths, overhead obstructions (cables/gutters), and any ground-level obstacles.
Note: Due to the size of swim spas, standard manual positioning is not possible; therefore, the route must be accessible for a heavy-duty delivery vehicle.
3. Specialist Delivery & Crane Requirements (Important)
Due to their immense weight and length, swim spas cannot be moved using standard spa dollies. They require specialist lifting equipment.
-
HIAB Crane Delivery: Most units are delivered via a truck-mounted ‘HIAB’ crane. The maximum reach is typically 7 metres, though this depends on the truck's orientation and the spa's final position.
-
Access Assessment: HIAB trucks are exceptionally large. You must ensure your driveway or access point can support the weight and width of an HGV.
-
Standalone Cranes: If the reach exceeds 7 metres or involves lifting over a house, a separate standalone crane is required. These can reach up to 44 metres but are very heavy and may not be able to drive on a standard domestic driveway.
-
Your Responsibility: It is the customer's sole responsibility to hire, coordinate, and pay the third-party crane company. We recommend a professional site survey by the crane provider to ensure they are suitably insured and have the correct equipment (e.g., spreader bars).
-
Finality: Once the crane positions the swim spa, it is in its permanent location. Ensure you are happy with the orientation while the crane is still on-site.
4. Manufacture & Preparation
Your swim spa is built to the highest industry standards, featuring reinforced acrylic shells and high-performance turbine or jet systems. Every unit undergoes a 24-hour wet test and a comprehensive quality-control check before being wrapped and prepared for specialist transit.
5. Delivery Scheduling
Once your swim spa is ready, we will notify you so you can schedule a delivery date. This is an all-day appointment. You will receive a call approximately one hour before the delivery team and the HIAB/crane vehicle arrive.
6. Site Preparation
Before delivery, you must ensure:
-
The Base: A reinforced concrete pad (minimum thickness of 150mm) is required. A swim spa can weigh upwards of 10,000kg when filled; a standard patio or "hot tub" base is often insufficient.
-
Clearance: Ensure there is no overhead interference (power lines or tree branches) within the crane’s operating radius.
7. Electrical Supply: 40 Amp Requirements
Swim spas require a significantly higher power draw than standard hot tubs to accommodate multiple swim pumps and high-kilowatt heaters.
-
Dedicated Supply: A 40 Amp dedicated supply is required, protected by a Type A RCD (Residual Current Device).
-
The Isolator: A qualified electrician must install an IP65-rated waterproof 45A rotary isolator switch, located between 2 and 5 metres from the swim spa.
-
Cable Specifications: * The installation typically requires a 10 mm² 3-core SWA (Steel Wire Armoured) cable to accommodate the high current and potential voltage drop over distance.
-
Ensure there is at least 5 metres of "tail" cable coming from the isolator to allow for internal routing within the spa cabinet to the control box.
-
Certification: All electrical work must comply with BS 7671 (Wiring Regulations) and be certified by a Part P registered electrician.
8. Water Supply & Drainage
Swim spas hold a vast volume of water (often 5,000 to 9,000+ litres).
-
Filling: Ensure you have access to a high-pressure water source. Filling can take several hours.
-
Drainage: Ensure the surrounding area has adequate drainage to handle splash-out or the eventual draining of the unit.
9. Delivery & Inspection
On delivery day, inspect the unit immediately upon arrival. Report any visible transit damage to the delivery driver and our team within 24 hours. Once the unit is lifted into place by the crane, the "delivery" phase is complete.
10. Installation / Setup
While our team assists with the positioning via crane, please note:
-
Connection: Our team does not perform the final hard-wiring into your consumer unit or isolator. Your qualified electrician must be present or scheduled to complete the final connection.
-
Components: We will assist in the placement of the cover and any included accessories.
11. Final Checks & Warranty Validation
-
Fill the Unit: Do not turn on the power until the water level reaches the specified height above the jets.
-
Commissioning: Once powered, test the swim current, heating system, and lighting.
-
Warranty: Ensure your electrician provides a minor works certificate to validate the electrical portion of your warranty.
