When this client approached us to design their home wellness retreat, they presented a brilliantly unique concept. They desired the intense, enveloping humidity of a traditional steam room, but they wanted to revolutionise the layout by mimicking the elevated, tiered seating structure usually reserved exclusively for bespoke dry saunas. Their goal was to create a highly spacious, multi-level therapeutic environment defined by a deeply personal and striking colour palette. We were thrilled to engineer a space that blended the best architectural elements of both thermal traditions.
Architectural Innovation: The Dual-Level "I" Benches
Standard steam rooms often feature single-level perimeter seating. To bring the client's vision to life, we engineered expansive, two-level "I" benches entirely clad in premium tiling.
Versatile Capacity
This tiered layout completely transforms the usability of the room. When hosting, the multi-level seating accommodates a large capacity of guests comfortably, allowing everyone to find their perfect temperature zone (as heat and steam naturally rise).
Uncrowded Luxury
Conversely, when used by just one or two people, the sprawling benches offer an incredibly spacious, uncrowded experience, providing ample room for the occupants to fully recline, stretch out, and surrender to the thermal therapy.
A Deeply Personal Palette: Purple and Obsidian
The visual identity of this steam room is nothing short of breathtaking. The client chose a highly bespoke tile pattern that held personal significance, utilising a brilliant interplay of light purple and deep black.
The Grounding Seats
To create a sleek, modern contrast, the primary seating surfaces where the occupants rest were finished in a complete, solid black tone. This anchors the room and provides a psychological sense of grounding.
Intricate Accents
The front-facing lower sections of the benches feature a meticulously crafted pattern of small black tiles seamlessly interwoven with the room's overarching purple theme. This intricate detailing gives the lower sightlines a rich, textured, and highly bespoke feel.
The Amethyst Glow
The walls and ceiling were adorned in beautiful, light purple tones. In colour therapy (chromotherapy), purple is renowned for its ability to calm the nervous system, reduce mental stress, and promote deep, restorative peace.
The Canopy of Comfort: The Arched Roof
To optimise the flow of the steam, we designed a beautifully sweeping, arched ceiling.
Form Meets Function
In a steam room, an arched roof is functionally brilliant, as it allows condensation to roll elegantly down the curved walls rather than dripping abruptly onto the occupants below.
The Cocoon Effect
Aesthetically, the arch gives the room a perfectly balanced atmosphere. It creates a compact, cocoon-like sense of intimacy and warmth, while simultaneously providing an expansive amount of vertical headroom, allowing users to sit perfectly upright on the top tier or lie down completely unhindered.
Therapeutic Illumination: Brilliant White Spotlights
To bring the striking colour palette to life, the lighting had to be expertly calibrated. We installed a series of dedicated, waterproof white spotlights strategically positioned around the perimeter of the arched ceiling.
Ethereal Reflections
When the room fills with thick, rolling steam, the crisp white light pierces through the mist and reflects off the light purple tiles. This interaction creates a breathtaking, ethereal glow throughout the entire cabin. It transforms the sanctuary into a luminous, highly therapeutic environment that dazzles the senses while melting away the day's physical fatigue.
