Understanding the difference is critical for a safe installation:

• Single-Wall Pipe: This is a non-insulated stainless steel pipe that connects directly to the top of your wood-burning stove. Because it is uninsulated, it gets incredibly hot and radiates heat into the sauna room. It must only be used inside the sauna and kept strictly away from combustible materials like timber benches and walls.
• Twin-Wall Insulated Flue: This pipe features a layer of high-density insulation sandwiched between two layers of stainless steel. You must transition to a twin-wall pipe before the chimney passes through any combustible surface (such as the sauna ceiling, roof, or a wooden wall) to prevent the surrounding structure from catching fire.

A safe, weatherproof, and compliant chimney system typically requires the following sequence of components, from bottom to top:

1. Stove Adaptor / Single-Wall Pipe: Connects directly to the stove outlet.
2. Single-to-Twin Adaptor: The transition piece where the insulated pipe begins.
3. Twin-Wall Lengths: The insulated pipe that safely carries smoke through the ceiling and roof.
4. Cover Plates (Rosettes): Decorative metal collars that tidy up the hole cut into the interior ceiling.
5. Roof Flashing: A high-temperature, flexible cone (often made of EPDM or silicone) that seals the exterior roof against rain.
6. Storm Collar: A metal ring tightened above the flashing to prevent water from running down the pipe.
7. Rain Cowl: The cap at the very top of the chimney that prevents rain, birds, and debris from falling into the flue.

Passing a flue through a combustible roof requires strict adherence to safety distances. You must use a twin-wall insulated flue for this section. Additionally, the hole cut into the timber must be larger than the pipe itself to maintain a specific air gap (the required clearance distance is stated by the pipe manufacturer, usually between 50mm and 60mm). You will then use a high-temperature roof flashing on the outside to ensure the gap is completely waterproof.

In the UK, installing a solid fuel appliance (like a wood-burning sauna stove) must comply with Document J of the Building Regulations. While a competent DIYer can physically assemble the parts, it is highly recommended to use a HETAS-registered installer. They will ensure the flue draught is correct, safety clearances are met, and provide a compliance certificate, which is often required for home insurance purposes.

If smoke is billowing into the sauna rather than going up the chimney, you likely have a "poor draught" (draw). This can be caused by:

• Insufficient Chimney Height: The flue may not be tall enough to clear the roof's wind eddies. Extending the twin-wall pipe by an extra metre often solves this.
• Lack of Ventilation: A fire requires oxygen. If your sauna cabin is too tightly sealed, the stove cannot draw air to push the smoke up. Ensure you have a low-level air intake vent open.
• Blocked Flue or Cowl: Soot build-up or a blocked rain cowl can restrict airflow.

To prevent the dangerous build-up of highly flammable creosote, your sauna flue should be swept at least once a year by a professional chimney sweep. If you use the sauna very frequently (e.g., several times a week) or occasionally burn unseasoned/wet wood, you should have it swept twice a year. Always burn dry, seasoned hardwood to minimize soot deposits and prolong the life of your stainless steel flue parts.
