Generally, no. While a 3kW appliance technically falls within the limit of a standard 13-amp UK plug, sauna heaters run at high power for extended periods. For safety and reliability, we strongly recommend that all heaters in this collection—even the smallest 3kW models—are hardwired into a dedicated circuit (often a 16-amp or 20-amp spur) by a qualified electrician.

• Most standard UK homes have a single-phase 230V supply with a main fuse of 60A, 80A, or 100A.
• Installing anything larger than 9kW usually requires a three-phase (400V) supply, which is rare in residential settings.

Glass panels (doors or windows) and uninsulated stone walls are poor insulators compared to timber. They lose heat rapidly.

Running costs for this range are quite economical because the heater does not run at full power continuously. Once the sauna reaches temperature (usually 70–85°C), the thermostat switches the elements off and on to maintain heat (typically a 50% duty cycle).

For a correctly sized heater in an insulated room, the heat-up time to reach a bathing temperature of 70°C+ is typically 30 to 45 minutes.

• If your sauna takes longer than 60 minutes, it is likely that the heater is under-powered for the volume of the room, or the insulation is insufficient.

You cannot use standard PVC twin-and-earth cable to connect directly to the heater, as the heat inside the sauna will degrade the plastic insulation. You must use high-temperature Silicone Rubber (SiHF) cable for the final connection from the isolator switch or control box into the heater itself.
